Ministry of Internal Affairs has cleared Police Director of Engineering and Logistics AIGP Godfrey Bangirana’s stay in office despite expiry of his contract last month.
Ministry of Internal Affairs Permanent Secretary Dr. Benon Mutambi in his letter dated July 22 addressed to Bangirana through the IGP Martin Okoth Ochola, said despite contract expiry on July 16, 2019, AIGP Bangirana had expressed interest to have it extended for two years.
He confirmed that the Police Authority had received Bangirana’s application and although no decision had been taken yet, it had been administratively decided that he carries on with his work.
“Arising out of the above and the need to keep continuity in the Police Force, it has been administratively decided that you stay in your office until the renewal of your contract is considered by the Appointing Authority,” said Dr Mutambi.
IGP Ochola confirmed receipt of Dr Mutambi's letter, thus suspending his earlier directive to have AIGP Bangirana vacate office and hand it over to SCP Richard Edyegu, who is one of the Deputy Directors in the Directorate. The IGP had on July 19 directed Bangirana, one of the most senior police officers to immediately vacate office following the expiry of his contract.
On Monday the youth under Uganda Young Democrats (UYD) had threatened to sue AIGP Bangirana if he doesn’t vacate office immediately. “You certainly understand that the contract on the basis of which you occupied the office of Director Engineering and Logistics expired on July 16, 2019. The same has never been renewed. This continued stay in office is illegal, capricious and an abuse of office,” the DP youth through their lawyers of Kiiza and Mugisha Advocates said in their letter of intent to sue dated August 22.
