Police in Kabale have arrested a 20 year old woman for allegedly drowning her friend’s two months old son in a river.
Kigezi regional police spokesperson, Elly Maate identifies the suspect as Macklin Ainembabazi, a bar maid and resident of Kigongi A Cell in Kabale Municipality. According to Maate the suspect, who is a neighbour and workmate to the deceased’s mother, Glorious Tumusiime at T & J Bar and Restaurant, reportedly picked the baby from her room on the night of March 11, when she was away for night duty.
“On the fateful evening of 11/3/2020 at around 22:00 hours, they (Glorious and the suspect) left for work, with Glorious leaving her child behind, locked in her room using a padlock of the suspect,” Maate explained. He added that on return from work at around 5am the next day, she found the room opened and the child missing.
“When she tried to inquire from the friend, now suspect, she was behaving suspiciously, and being the one with copies of the keys and had for long threatened to harm the child because the mother was proud of him, Ainembabazi was arrested at the area local council one chairman when they went to report the incident. She was later referred to police for questioning as search for the child continued,” Maate said.
It was until Thursday March 19 at around 7:30pm when a decomposing body of the missing baby was sighted floating on the waters of river Kiruruma. It was seen by children who were grazing goats. The Police was notified, retrieved the body and postmortem done before it was handed over to the mother.
The suspect, now detained at Kabale Police station is being charged with child stealing with intent to murder as inquiries continue.
