The U.S. government at the weekend donated over 3 million doses of Covid-19 Pfizer vaccines to boost the vaccination exercise in Uganda.

"More Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine doses from the United States arrived in Uganda today," the US embassy in Uganda tweeted Sunday.

"The 3,488,940 doses that arrived this weekend represent the largest ever donation of COVID-19 vaccines to Uganda [and] underscores the United States commitment to Uganda’s COVID-19 response [and] to protect health of the Ugandan people."

Since the vaccination exercise commenced in March 10, 8,912,810 doses of Covid vaccines have been imported and 3,483,212 have been administered as of Nov. 6.

12,288,750 more doses are expected by the end of December, according to the Minister of  Health Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng.

The country's plan is to immunize 4.8 priority people by end of December as the economy fully reopens in January.

The health ministry has said that the main drivers of Covid-19 transmission in the country are non-compliance to SOPs, communal gatherings at drinking points, weddings, burials and social activities, and low uptake of vaccines

Dr. Aceng has said that the latest data shows that more females are now being infected than males, which was different in the first wave.

"This signifies widespread community infection," the minister said in a Friday statement.

She has said that the largest affected age group are 20-29-year-olds and 55% of the confirmed cases are among females.
