Police in Fort Portal have arrested a prominent preacher Bishop Robert Musinguzi of Agape Ministries for allegedly conning over 100 youth after promising them scholarships and jobs abroad.
Bishop Musinguzi formerly belonged to Light of Life cathedral located along Malibu road in Fort Portal town before Agape Ministries partnered with him and changed the name of the church.
According to Fort Portal Police station Officer in Charge Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Directorate (OC CIID) ASP Godliver Twinomugisha, Bishop Musinguzi was arrested on Wednesday on allegations of fraud and conning youth of their money promising to help them get education scholarships and good jobs abroad.
His arrest came after two students whose parents were conned of their money lodged complaints at the police seeking for immediate intervention and have the money recovered.
The parents came out claiming that Bishop Musinguzi had defrauded their money worth Shs6m under the disguise of helping their children attain education scholarships abroad.
According to police, Bishop Musinguzi has conned over 100 youth most of whom are members of his church.
The youth told police that Mr Musinguzi took the money in January promising to take them to South Africa and America in two weeks time but waited in vain.
On searching the church, police officers were shocked to find exhibits of short term military training documents, education scholarship forms among others.
On interrogation, Bishop Musinguzi who appeared speechless, denied knowledge of the documents found in the church but consented with those found at his home.
After making a statement, Bishop Musinguzi was detained at Fort Portal police station as investigations continue.
