Eight suspects have been arrested in Hoima as police hunt for a stolen gun.
The suspects now in detention at Hoima Central Police station were arrested following an incident in Kiryatete, a Hoima town suburb where thugs raided the area, stole money and other valuables. They later disarmed a security guard and took off with his gun.
Albertine region police Spokesperson Julius Allan Hakiza says the thugs attacked Patrick Businge, a security guard attached to ANKA Security Services. Businge was at the time of the attack on Saturday morning deployed at Care Auto Mobile in Kiryatete.
The robbers severely assaulted him before stealing his gun. Hakiza explains that although the army and police rounded up some of the suspects, the gun is yet to be recovered.
“Investigations continue and we are arresting more suspects until we recover the gun,” Hakiza insisted. The lost rifle is no. UG POL 67740 P 7865.
“We don’t know whether the rifle had ammunition or not, since the security guard is not yet stable to give us a statement,” the police spokesperson added.
Businge is admitted at Hoima regional referral hospital.
Of recent, security personnel have been targeted by thugs and their guns taken. Last month the police lost three guns and two of its officers who were shot dead by armed attackers in Kawempe. The other gun was lost during an attack at a police post in Busia near the Uganda-Kenya Border.
These guns are still missing and security fears they could be used to commit more violent crimes.
