KAMPALA. Police in Kampala has arrested 146 people as part of a sting operation aimed at reducing crime in the city and paving way for a peaceful Christmas season.

The suspects were arrested on suspicion of involvement in crimes such as robbery, counterfeits and drug abuse and distribution, mugging of people, pick pocketing on streets and in traffic jam, vehicle vandalism among others.

The operation in which several suspects were arrested, screened by local leaders and elders was commanded by Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander, Commissioner of Police Moses Kabugo Kafeero.

“Whereas the previous clean up exercise was focused on major criminal black spots in areas of Market Street, Platinum House, Allen Road, Nakivubo Channel, Kinyamwandu and Nabugabo, today's operation focused on areas of Makindye, Ndeeba, Kinyoro, Kisenyi, Katwe, Kisekka, Kikoni, Kasubi, Kawaala and Nakulabye,” Kampala Metropolitan Police said in a statement on Thursday.

Police adds that these pre-Christmas operations are systematically geared towards controlling key black spots around the city that are often used in harboring criminals and their activities.

During the operations, 146 suspects were arrested and 38 released following a screening exercise by the local leaders and community elders.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander CP. Kafeero said that the ongoing efforts by police in Kampala sends a clear warning message to offenders that security agencies shall not be winding down for Christmas and letting them go on their merry way.

"Throughout these remaining months towards Christmas season, police shall be carrying out a series of high-profile days of action aimed at disrupting criminal activities and keeping the good people of Kampala safe during the festive period," he said.

On Friday, Police in Kampala arrested other 41 suspects in the same operation.

The operation targeted areas of Market Street, Platinum House, Allen Road, Nakivubo Channel, Kinyamwandu and Nabugabo. These areas are commonly identified as the black spots and have always been regarded impassable both during day and night hours.
