The Secretariat of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) has condemned the heinous attack against a MONUSCO-FIB Company Operating Base (COB), and FARDC in Beni territory, North Kivu by suspected ADF terrorists which left 15 peacekeepers dead, 53 injured and 3 others missing.
In a statement released Saturday afternoon, the ICGLR Secretariat says it was shocked by the attack, adding,
“The secretariat has learnt with shock and dismay of the heinous attack on 7 December 2017, against a MONUSCO-FIB Company Operating Base (COB), and FARDC in Beni territory, North Kivu by suspected ADF terrorists which left 15 peacekeepers dead, 53 injured and 3 others missing,” reads the statement in part.
“The Secretariat condemns in the strongest terms the tragic attack by this barbaric, terrorist group and the killing of UN Peacekeepers and the FARDC,” further reads, the statement.
"The ICGLR Executive Secretary Ambassador Zachary Muburi-Muita, conveys his heartfelt sympathy and condolences to His Excellency, Joseph Kabila Kabange, President of the DRC, and through your Excellency to the government of the DRC, and families of those who lost their loved ones while on duty serving their country,” the statement adds.
Amb. Muburi-Muita also, in the statement “conveys his heartfelt sympathy and condolences to H.E Dr. John Pombe Magufuli, President of the United Republic of Tanzania and through your Excellency to the Government of Tanzania, and families of those who lost their loved ones while on a peace keeping mission”.
Meanwhile the ICGLR urges the DRC Government, MONUSCO and the international community to put more pressure towards the neutralisation of the ADF and all other armed groups in Eastern DRC.
“The ICGLR reiterates the need to double regional efforts including the full operationalization of the Joint Follow –up Mechanism on the ADF in eliminating the terrorist group, and other negative forces in the DRC and the Great Lakes region,” reads the statement.
