Joram Ruranga Tibasiimwa on Saturday emerged the NRM flag-bearer in the race to represent the western Uganda-based elderly in parliament.

Tibasiimwa, a renowned educationist who retired as a headteacher of Mbarara High School after 33 years of service, scored 215 votes (77.9%), beating Annah Muhindo who got 30 votes (10.9%), Rtd Bishop Masereka Kahangwa Zebedee (29 votes [10.5%]) and Priscah Mwesigwa (2 votes [0.7%]).

Joram Ruranga Tibasiimwa says he picked interest in the race after realizing that the elderly were encountering multiple challenges, especially the protection of their rights.

As the chairman of the national council for elders, he has helped draft a bill to protect properties and rights of older persons and he says being in parliament, will help push the bill further.

He also said that he will advocate for the establishment of health insurance for the older persons and root for lowering the age of those that benefit from the social assistance grant for empowerment (SAGE) from 80 years to 6o years.

Apart from Mbarara H/S, Tabasiimwa, who was born in 1943, also served as the headmaster of schools like Muntuyera H/S and Ruyonza SS. He will be representing thirty-five districts if he wins the final race.
