The Minister of Health, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng warns that her Ministry would cut funding for hospitals found with expired drugs.
The Minister who was in Hoima district for an inspection tour of health facilities on Wednesday adds that District Health Officers (DHO) and Chief Administrative Officers (CAO) will be held responsible for the expired drugs.
“We did write letters as Ministry of Health and by then I was the Director General Health Services and I indicated that should I find any expiry in any hospital with these meager resources, the district and the DHO will be held responsible,” Dr. Aceng warned.
“We want to start a process of quantifying the expiries and cutting off the money allocated to those expiries, because it means you have excess money,” she added.
Dr. Aceng’s comments came after she found large consignments of expired drugs at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital.
The Auditor General's report of the financial year 2015/2016 also pointed out the issue of expired drugs at Kagadi and Masindi General Hospitals. Auditor General John Muwanga asked why expired drugs were dumped in an open space at Masindi General Hospital something he said could endanger human lives.
A similar query was raised at Kagadi General Hospital in the then Kibaale district where expired drugs were found in the store and the hospital administration cited lack of transport to take them away for disposal.
Hoima district Health Officer, Dr Joseph Ruyonga says some drug expiries are sometimes as a result of change in policy on usage of certain drug types, while at times patients don’t come in time to use certain drugs.
