Ugandan long-distance runner Joshua Cheptegei claimed gold at the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar's Capital after emerging winner at the men's 10,000 meters heat on Sunday at the Khalifa International Stadium.

His triumph comes a week after another Ugandan, Halima Nakaayi claimed gold in the women's 800 meters heat.

Cheptegei who won silver at the same event two years ago in London this time round triumphed with a winning time of 26:48.36 to become the first Ugandan to win gold in that category.

It was also Uganda's ninth overall gold at the event.

Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha was breathing on Cheltegei's neck in the final laps but he (Yomif) had to settle for silver after finishing second with a winning time of 26:49.34

Kenya's Rhonex Kipruto finished third with a winning time of 26:50.32 to seal Africa's podium dominance.

However, Cheptegei, also World Cross Country Champion has now claimed many podium finishes at IAAF meets including claiming 5,000m gold at the IAAF Diamond League in Switzerland in August.
