ENTEBBE. Municipalities and Town councils will soon receive road equipment, President Yoweri Museveni has promised.
The President made the pledge on Thursday while touring different Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOs) in Entebbe. He was responding to a request by the Katabi Town Council Chairman Ronald Kalema for government to also consider town councils and give them road equipment.
Kalema said Katabi Town council is finding difficulty maintaining roads because of lack of equipment. In response, the President said Town councils and Municipalities will soon receive road equipment.
“On the issue of road maintenance, Municipalities and Town Councils will get road equipment. Districts have been getting road units, the scheme will be rolled to cover Town councils and Municipalities,” the President said.
Kalema had earlier praised the President for the developments attained during the NRM regime.
“Mr. President, I am a DP (Democratic Party) member but I want to thank you because of the tangible development the country has achieved,” Kalema said.
About Road Equipment
Mid last year, Government gave out 1,151 pieces of road construction equipment imported from Japan, for distribution to all the 118 districts then.
The equipment, bought using a loan from the Japanese Bank for International Cooperation, were to enable maintenance of roads under the care of district local governments.
Each district received a road unit comprising a motor grader, one vibro roller, a wheel loader, one water bowser and two dump trucks.
