Italian President Congratulates President Museveni on Re-election
The President of Italy, H.E Sergio Mattarella has congratulated his Ugandan counterpart, Gen Yoweri Museveni upon re-election for another five-year term.
Museveni was declared winner of the January 14 polls after garnering 58.6% of the votes against his closest rival and National Unity Platform’s Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine who got only 34.8% of the votes cast.
In a brief message, H.E Sergio Mattarella said: "In view of your re-installation as the President of the Republic of Uganda, I would like to wish you every good luck in your high office".
The Italian President added: "Relations between our countries are characterized by bonds of friendship which should further be deepened. In this context, I trust that together out countries can give new impetus to bilateral and international cooperation - Also in the framework of relations between Kampala and the European Union- For the benefit of stability and sustainable development in the region."

Italy-Uganda Relations
Uganda and Italy have enjoyed close historical ties especially in the fields of trade, tourism, health, education and defense cooperation. Some of the leading hospitals and education institutions in the country were founded by Italian missionaries, and trade and business between the two countries has been growing steadily over recent decades.
The Italian President joins a long list of world leaders that have congratulated President Museveni upon his re-election.
Other leaders that have congratulated Gen Museveni include Russian President, Vladimir Putin, the President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping and regional leaders including President Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta of Kenya, Prime Minister of Ethiopia Abiy Ahmed, and Evariste Ndayishimiye, the President of Burundi among others.
