KAMPALA. The Minister of State for Ethics and Integrity, Fr Simon Lokodo has confirmed that the much advertised MTN Nyege Nyege festival that was set to happen in Jinja on September 6-9 has been cancelled, just two days to the event.
The Minister who on Monday wrote to Internal Affairs Minister Gen Jeje Odongo seeking to have the event blocked over guy links, confirmed at a press conference at the Uganda Media Centre.
“It’s unfortunate that we are cancelling Nyege Nyege at the last minute, but losing our morals will not be accepted.”
“Homosexuality will not be accepted, I have already written to Police to stop it and it will be done,” the Minister added.
He said that the festival should have been stopped in 2017 but the escaped.
"I wanted Nyege Nyege cancelled last year but they escaped. Ministry of Foreign Affairs is not aware of their activities and this should be a security issue. It is the organisers of Nyege Nyege that didn’t come to us for clarification."
"This event called Nyege Nyege is off. It won’t happen in 2018," he emphasized.
In a September 3, letter to Internal Affairs Minister Gen. Jeje Odongo, Lokodo had indicated that he had received credible information that the event’s purpose has been compromised to pave way for recruitment of young people into homosexuality.
