How Makeup Business is flourishing in Uganda

Initially, make up was done by whoever had an idea about applying powder of foundation, lipstick and that was all. But in a few years probably two years back, makeup artists have made a name for their exquisite face bits and are earning lots of money.

Makeup artists in Uganda especially Kampala are enjoying the perks of doing what they have and some are earning six figures out of making people feel and look good.

Initially, make up was done by whoever had an idea about applying powder of foundation, lipstick and that was all. But in a few years probably two years back, makeup artists have made a name for their exquisite face bits and are earning lots of money.

From Mona Faces, Fyona Kirabo, Fayth Pesh and many more have made it clear to the world that one can earn a stable living through makeup. Just like any other business, there is need to market yourself but most importantly it is the work that sells you. Surprisingly, most of them have gone to school to study cosmetology, it is through internet that they also follow up tutorials about the new trends.

Marketing alternatives

Makeup artists in Uganda are using social media to the maximum. They use Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat where they post pictures and videos of their makeup sessions. Needless to see this is the best way most of them have had their foot in the door and have gained higher clientele. Some have gone extra miles to set themselves apart from completion by giving offers to ‘people that matter’ and in this case celebrity endorsement has substantially worked for them.

It is never a dull day for artists especially freelance makeup artists because anyone can end up in the makeup chair. It is always entirely the responsibility of the artists to read and master their clientele social standards and be able to adjust their attitude to make them much comfortable to come back any time. From my experience, while these guys are doing makeup, they try to make one feel safe and confident. It is a physical intimate experience because each and everything matters and now that they are quite a good number, they want to beat the competition.

Today’s makeup is way costly and one must have more than Shs50,000 to have their face made up. One will ask herself what this comes with but if you do not want to ruin you outfit with colour, or have it melt off with time, you have to pay highly.

To the advantage of the makeup artists, Ugandans always do not want to be left behind when it comes to some of these crazes and are willing to pay to achieve sophisticated looks.  Those who have done their best have annual deals with celebrities and are hired to do their makeup daily and this is a dream for everyone in this business because there is a monthly salary at the end of the day.

On weddings

Make up has been embraced highly and artists get to celebrate when people are getting married. At these functions, depending on where the function is, there are different costs and without forgetting how big the bride’s entourage is. The further the distance, the more costly it gets. To sum it up all, you may need to just spare over 3M on makeup if your party is not around Kampala. And finally out of this, those that started as freelancers have set up superb makeup studios and are even conducting makeup classes that are also at a specified price!
