Mountain Division and Joint Staff Headquarters Shine at 16th CDF Cup

The 16th edition of the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Cup concluded with thrilling victories by the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Mountain Division and Joint Staff Headquarters (JSHQ) in football and netball, respectively. The event, held at St. Leo’s College in Fort Portal, Kabarole District, brought together top UPDF units for a celebration of sport, discipline, and camaraderie.

In a dramatic football final, the Mountain Division clinched the title with a 3-1 victory over JSHQ in a penalty shootout after a tense game. Meanwhile, JSHQ asserted their dominance in netball, defeating the UPDF Air Force with a commanding 49-34 score.

Lt Gen Charles Awany Otema, Commander of the Reserve Force, represented the Chief of Defence Forces at the event. He emphasized the vital role of physical fitness in military discipline and longevity. “If you want to reach where we are in age, you must stay healthy through sports because it’s part of discipline,” he stated.

Col Paul Muwonge, Deputy Commander of the Mountain Division, praised UPDF leadership for their consistent support and urged participants to continue embodying the unity and commitment displayed throughout the competition.

On behalf of Joint Staff Headquarters, Col Deus Taremwa, Director of Education, Sports, and Culture, highlighted the tournament’s aim to foster harmony among soldiers while uplifting their morale. He underscored the tournament’s role in uniting the UPDF beyond the battlefield.

The event also recognized individual talents. Pte Chandia Alex and Pte Wanyenze Bila were named Most Valuable Players, while standout performers like Pte Kajumba Agnes (Best Netball Shooter) and Pte Ayijuka Edgar (Top Football Scorer) were awarded for their efforts.

Wazalendo SACCO’s CEO, Col Joseph Freddy Onata, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to sponsoring the event, noting: “We take pride in promoting the health of our people and, more importantly, the development of talents.”

The Armoured Division was honored as the most disciplined team, exemplifying the tournament's emphasis on both athletic and moral excellence.

The CDF Cup event attracted senior military officials, city leaders, and politicians, including Woman MP Hon. Linda Irene, underscoring the tournament's significance in promoting unity and development within the UPDF.
