Museveni Meets Envoys of Four Nordic Countries
President Yoweri Museveni on Thursday met ambassadors from the Nordic region.
In a Twitter statement, the president said he had met ambassadors of Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Iceland at State House Entebbe.
Nikolaj A. Heiberg Petersen is the Danish envoy to Uganda, Sweden is represented by Maria Hakansson, Iceland’s head of mission is Þórdís Sigurðardóttir while Elin Østebø Johansen is the Norwegian envoy to Uganda.
According to President Museveni, they “discussed matters pertaining to economic development and cooperation”.
The Nordic countries have played a key role in supporting Uganda’s recovery from Covid-19. For instance, Denmark donated over Shs5 billion, Sweden contributed US$5.6 million, Norway donated 864 000 doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines and over Shs8 billion.
According to data from the United Nations Comtrade database on international trade, Uganda’s biggest exports to Denmark are oil seed, fruits, grain, seeds, coffee, tea, mate and spices, fish, crustaceans, molluscs and aquatic invertebrates.
In 2019, Sweden exported $20.7 million worth of products to Uganda, according to a 2020 Uganda-Sweden Trade report. The same report shows that Sweden bought goods worth $3.6 million from Uganda. Uganda mainly imports machinery, electronics, pharmaceuticals, vehicles and plastics from Sweden, while the East African nation sells to flowers, coffee and some manufactured products to the Scandinavian country.
The Swedish government has since 2000 pumped about $73.3 million to support research cooperation between Ugandan and Swedish universities in areas of medicine, technology and innovation.
