Three people have been confirmed dead while two are missing after a boat carrying 17 people capsized on Lake Victoria on Saturday evening.

The 17 were travelling from Bugoto in Mayuge to Maninga Beach in Sigulu West Namayingo. The boat capsized at Buyanga in Sigulu West.

Emilian Kayima the Police Spokesman while addressing the media at the Central Police Station on Monday said that the boat was hit by a strong wave causing it to capsize.

Kayima said that out of the 17, 12 people were rescued by another sailor, Ivan Ssemalulu who was sailing in a different boat.

The deceased were identified as Bwoza Kathan, 53, Nabirye Lukia, 40, and Hadijjah Muhammad, 40.

The two that are still missing are; Mugweri Rashid, 25, and Obama Hussein, 48.

“Our marine officers and the territorial police intervened and are jointly handling the situation,” Kayima said.

Rampant Cases

Several cases of such accidents have been reported with the recent having happened in October 2017, when a prominent businessman in Bugiri, Mr. Sanyu Madeke died under similar circumstances while he was on the waters of Lake Victoria in Dolwe Island. Two other people died along. The accident also happened at night at around 3:00am.

The Police Spokesman cautioned people using water transport to always travel during day time and use life jackets in order to save their lives.

Kayima added that travelling at night by water is risky since chances of being rescued are minimal.
