A Kampala based hotel has apologized hours after circulating a job advert seeking to recruit only white and Indian people to fill particular slots.

Located in Mutundwe, a Kampala suburb, Serene Suites & Hotel sponsored a job advert in the New Vision of Monday stating that white people and Indians were at an advantage to get top managerial jobs ahead of their black counterparts.

However the Hotel has now issued a statement explaining the advert that was widely criticized by the public.

“The management of Serene Suites & Hotel – Mutundwe with regret apologises for the advert (that was published) in the New Vision. We recognize that the advert was packaged in a way deemed discriminative,” reads in part the statement from the hotel.

The advert that was published on Monday February 13 drew criticism among the members of the public on various social media platforms with some people calling for action against the hotel management for exhibiting discrimination based on race in their recruitment drive.

The advert had a list of slots including opportunities for waitresses and waiters, kitchen chefs, receptionists, pool attendants, housekeepers among others.

When it came to the slot of Hotel Manager and Restaurant Manager, the hotel indicated a preference for a white and an Indian person respectively.

The hotel’s statement comes after the Equal Opportunities Commission ordered the hotel to explain the basis of the job advert in which they ring-fenced the top managerial jobs for particular people.  The Equal Opportunities Commission is mandated to eliminate discrimination and inequalities against any individual or group.

“The management’s intent was never to discriminate or offend the public but rather to recruit a talent with expert experience and international exposure to train and upscale local staff in the current competitive leisure and hospitality market,” the statement from the hotel reads further.

However one could argue that there are Ugandans who are not white or Indians that maybe meet the desired qualifications to fill the two positions that were ring fenced by the hotel in the advert.

However, the hotel says it has over the years prioritized the employment of Ugandans, adding that it has a fair employment policy.
