BUGIRI. President Yoweri Museveni and National Chairman of NRM on Wednesday urged the electorate in the newly created constituency of Bugiri Municipality, Bugiri District in Busoga Sub-Region, to choose leaders who understand the concerns of the people and who bear constructive outreach.
"NRM gave the people the mandate to vote for leaders who are focused and constructive in the execution of duties. But when voters elect people who do not perform, it is 'self injury' and a disservice to society," he said.
The President, who was in the area to mobilise votes for the NRM flag bearer, Mr. John Francis Oketcho, for MP slot in Bugiri Municipality, also told voters at a rally at Bukooli Technical School to ensure that people live a healthy life.
"Initially, NRM fought and eradicated 13 killer diseases through mass immunisation. In addition to safe water, good nutrition, drugs, avoiding risky behaviour and prevention of malaria, is the way to avoid 80% of diseases," he said adding that prevention is better than cure. He, therefore, called on leaders to always advise wananchi to strive and lead healthy lives.
The President also warned against politics of sectarianism on tribal, religious or other tendencies saying that whoever promotes sectarianism should be recorded for evidence and bought to book under the law.

After introducing Mr. Oketcho as the NRM flag bearer for MP slot for Bugiri Municipality, President Museveni explained to the people of the area that other pertinent issues that they raised, such as job creation, establishing factories, the youth fund and skilling promotion are already under government program for implementation.
During the rally, the President received a group of over 200 converts from the opposition groups who crossed to NRM.
The NRM secretary General, Justine Kasule Lumumba, reported that NRM performed excellently in the recent women and villages elections. She said that out of 60,800 villages, NRM won 56,800 and that out of 340,000 slots for women leaders, NRM garnered 280,000.
She, however, informed the President that the campaign in Bugiri Municipality had been given a sectarian tinge by the opposition along religion. The election is due on Friday 27th July 2018.
On his way to the rally, President Museveni made a stopover at Kirongero Church of God Primary School and encouraged pupils to take their education career with determination to ensure a bright future. He also urged the teaching staff and members of the community there to support government’s development programmes.
