President Yoweri Museveni has supported the community -based initiatives aimed at increasing household incomes through provision of common user facility machines to different groups in all Sub-Counties in Rukungiri district in South Western Uganda.
While speaking to a multitude of people who gathered at Rukungiri Stadium in Rukungiri Municipality on Sunday, President Museveni urged them in particular and Ugandans in general especially the youth to engage in government projects designed to help different groups to fight against poverty.
"You have to benefit from government programmes. These are programmes designed to help the people but you find you don't know about them and the youth are busy in FDC being deceived," he said.
The President distributed different items that included bodabodas, garage equipment and breakdown towing vehicles, tents and chairs, sewing machines, woodwork machines, car washing machines, assorted machinery, saucepans and warmers for women groups, tractors, lorries.
Different categories of people that benefited included the youth, women and people with disability in all the 10 Sub-Counties in the district. His initiative also saw organized SACCOs get seed money.
All the ten Sub-Counties – Rukungiri Municipality, Nyarushanje, Nyakishenyi, Kebisoni, Buyanja, Bugangari, Buhunga, Ruhinda, Bwambara and Nyakagyeme – benefited from the President's programme to kick poverty out of their homes.
Such Presidential initiative is slated to roll out to all parts of the country as per Mr. Museveni’s 2016 promise Presidential campaign.
Other areas in and around Kampala that have already benefited from the President's initiative include Najjera metal fabricators in Wakiso District, Mulago Car Washers’, Kubbili Carpenters’ Association, Katwe Welders Association, Nsambya Furniture Group, Rubaga, Kinyatta Market in Kawempe, Zana Market and Bwebajja Fruit Sellers, among others.
President Museveni stressed that people should engage in projects that suit their land holdings adding that wananchi should select wisely enterprises like poultry, piggery and fruit farming, that do not require a lot of land.
He also warned against land fragmentation and other bad inheritance practices adding that politics that is based on sectarianism of tribes and religion must be shunned because it constitutes enmity to development.
President Museveni told the people of Rukungiri District his visit to the area was aimed at ensuring that no one in the area is left out in the NRM Government’s struggle to banish household poverty. He passionately advised the people particularly the youth to start income generating projects so that when Government comes in to help, it should find groups that have bases on which to further improve the viability of their development efforts.
State Minister for Housing, Hon. Chris Baryomunsi, commended the President's initiative of wealth creation among the people of Uganda. He called for unity of the people of Rukungiri District to root for development.
The Chairperson of NRM in Rukungiri District Rukungiri, Jim Muhwezi, thanked President Museveni for loving Rukungiri so much that he has been to the area 2 times in a spell of a short time.
During the function, a number FDC members, crossed to NRM.
