HOIMA. Five people have been confirmed dead and four others critically injured after a taxi they were travelling in rammed into a stationed trailer in Kiryandongo district last night.

The accident occurred along Gulu-Kampala highway at around 9pm.

The deceased have been identified as Fredrick Sunde, a resident of Kakunguru in Kawempe, Joseph Adepo from Mukono District and an employee working with National Forestry Authority, Tommy Ojoko, and a resident Kawoko in Mutunde Sub-county Kiryandongo District.

Others are one Liario aged 50, a resident of Kigoma village in Kiryandongo District while the fifth one was not readily identified.

Julius Allan Hakiiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson says the accident occurred at Chepelwo trading, Kibanda North, Kiryabndongo district.

He said those critically injured include Vicky Auma, a resident of Kisura village in Kiryandongo District, Ronald Waswa, the taxi driver, Patrick Opio, a resident of Dokolo district and Benson Asisi hailing from Arua district. They are all still admitted at Kiryandongio district.

According to Mr. Hakiiza, the trailer had parked on the roadside after developing a mechanical problem when the tax I which was heading to Kampala rammed into it.

Hakiiza blames the accident on reckless driving by the taxi driver. “We suspect the taxi driver was speeding and that is why he could not notice a parked truck on the roadside,” he said as he cautioned drivers who travel at night against speeding.
