Today is Liberation Day, in commemoration of the day the NRA, a military wing of the NRM, captured power on January 26, 1986, from the Tito Okello Lutwa military government, which had overthrown Dr. Milton Obote’s government. The government then was accused of corruption, civil rights offenses and practiced significant voter fraud to remain in power.
The 33rd Liberation Day celebrations are underway at Muwafu Primary School playground in Tororo District. President Yoweri Museveni who led the five year (1981-1986) bush war in Luwero triangle is expected to officiate as chief guest.
During the event over 200 distinguished Ugandans are expected to receive medals for their contribution to the development of the country.
This year’s event is being held under theme,” “A moment of glory that set a new chapter for Unity, Peace, and prosperity in Uganda”.
