KOTIDO. The Uganda Peoples Defence Force-UPDF 3rd Division command in Kotido district has recovered six guns and more than 120 rounds of ammunition.
The firearms were recovered during an operation conducted in Napumpum parish, Panyangara Sub County. The army suspects the firearms could have been used in cattle theft.
Nine people have since been arrested and are currently under detention at the Nakapelimoru Brigade Headquarters. However, Capt. Isaac Oware, the 3rd Division Spokesperson declined to reveal their identities.
Since November last year, 22 firearms with 309 rounds of ammunition have been recovered by the UPDF from armed Karimojong warriors. 144 warriors have also been tried in a court martial in Moroto district.
According to Oware, the army has also recovered 1,817 livestock including cattle, goats, sheep and donkeys and have since been returned to the owners.
Cattle theft and raids are rampant in Karamoja region with the practice spilling over to the neighboring sub regions.
