A Leopard that snatched and ate a Ranger's child in Queen Elizabeth National Park was also killed, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has revealed.

Two and a half year old Elisha Nabugyere was devoured by the wild animal early this month. It snatched the toddler from the house where he was seated with the maid at the UWA Camp. Efforts to rescue the child were fruitless as the leopard carried him to the jungle. Only his skull and other bones were later found.

Bashir Hangi, the Communications Manager at Uganda Wildlife Authority says the killer Leopard was tracked down and killed two days later.

“After tasting human flesh, which is easy to get, there were higher chances it would want to eat humans again. We couldn't put people's lives in danger,” Hangi told Kampala Post in a message.

He added, “Eliminating it (Leopard) was considered a better option. It also gives relief to the people around that peninsula. We don't want people to live in fear all the time.”

UWA has since regretted the incident and pledged to stand with the family.

"We have an arrangement for our staff who lose their lives or their loved ones in the line of duty," Hangi told this Website following the incident.

How Elisha was killed

According to the father, SSP Francis Manana Nabugyere, an officer at the Police Senior Command and Staff College Bwebajja, the son met his death at around 7:30pm on Friday May 4. This was after the Leopard sneaked into their residence in the camp and snatched the child.

He was seated near the doorway at the time with the maid besides him. His mother who is a park ranger was at the neighbour’s at the time.
