A man in Kibaale District is under police protection, after community members turned against him accusing him of tempering with a grave in an alleged attempt to exhume a body.
The residents of Kicunda Village in Kyebando Sub County accuse their village mate of digging up a grave of one Joyce who was buried recently and stealing a cross and other materials buried with the deceased.
He was picked up by the police on Sunday as residents attempted to lynch him.
”We picked him after the complaint reached us, but our findings indicate that the residents just set up the scene to pin him because he owns a shrine and they didn’t know what was inside it,” said Kibaale District Police Commander David Otabongo.
Otabongo added that “Our sniffer dog was taken to the scene and it did not get any person and the grave had no signs of being tampered with.”
“On Monday we took him back, opened the shrine in full view of the community members and nothing was there. He even accepted to burn it,” Otabongo explained.
He reveals that the suspect is being held for safe custody, adding that they had agreed with the residents that he would be released on Thursday after days of police community policing.
The residents had suspected the man to have exhumed the body for ritual purposes.
He has since denied the allegations, ‘‘I have never exhumed the body and even God is seeing me but I ask you to forgive me,’’ he pleaded with residents on Monday.
