The Uganda national volleyball teams (both men and women) - Volleyball Cranes and Lady Volleyball Cranes on Thursday night emerged champions of the East Africa Community (EAC) Games in their respective category at the Parque Sports Arena.

Uganda Minister of state for sports Hon. Charles Bakkabulindi and the National Council of Sports (NCS) acting General Secretary Patrick Ogwel were in Bujumbura to witness the Uganda heroics.

In the finals, Uganda teams faced the Burundian teams (both men and women) with the men winning 3-1 and ladies 3-2.

The victory implies that Uganda national volleyball teams have laid a blue print in the region off the inaugural tournament that is still underway in Burundi.

The National Volleyball coach Nason Bwesigye was happy with the results but had expected his side to emerge victors.

''We had the best team in the tournament and we had also trained very hard prior to the competition. The players have been in such tournaments and that is why they had a relatively easy challenge,'' Bwesigye told reporters.

The games started on August 16 and will end on August 30 with Uganda having fed the maiden tournament with various sports disciplines.

European based Uganda Volleyball Cranes duo of Daudi Okello (Galatasary VC - Turkey) and Kathbart Malinga (Lukoil Neftohimik Burgas VC - Bulgaria) spurred Uganda to victory with their expertise in the game and were often a thorn in the flesh for the rival sides.

The Bujumbura showpiece has been graced by all East Africa nations.
