Cabinet Minister in charge of Karamoja Affairs John Byabagambi is among the amateur golfers that teed off at the Amateur Open of the 2018 Castle Lite Uganda Golf Open Championship at Entebbe Golf Club.

The Amateur event started on Wednesday going till Saturday is considered as the main event of the championship.

Byagambi is in the same group with Alex Coutinho and David Semambya Mpanga.

''I am happy to be part of the championship because this is the main golf event in East Africa. I do not know where I will finish on Saturday but it is a pleasure playing here,'' Byabagambi told reporters on Wednesday evening.

Toro Golf Club star Ronald Rugumayo won last year's Amateur Open but has turned professional this year.

Rugumayo paved way for his fellow Toro Golf Club star Ronald Otile to return to winning ways.

Otile won the Amateur title in 2015 and 2016 and has vowed to replicate his previous performance for this year’s open.

This year's championship marks the 77th edition of the tournament and has attracted over 150 golfers just at the Amateur category.

The Ladies Open ended on Saturday with Tanzania's Neema Olomi emerging champion for the first time ever and also becoming the second Tanzanian to win the title after Eaton Howard Angel.

The professionals will also tee off on Monday for the whole week with overseas players already in the country for the games.
