Uganda Cranes Captain Onyango Named in African Team of The Year

Onyango’s berth is no surprise to many for he was inspirational for the Uganda Cranes team leading them to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations with a game to spare. Uganda Cranes are still unbeaten with Onyango being the only goal keeper yet to concede a goal.

Uganda Cranes Captain and goal keeper Denis Masinde Onyango was on the night of Tuesday named on the FIFPro Team of the year/Best XI for the year 2018 during the Aiteo CAF Awards ceremony held in Dakar, Senegal.

The event was attended by reputable football brains notably FIFA President Gianni Infantino, CAF President Ahmad Ahmad, President of Republic of Senegal Macky Sall and FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo, among others.

Onyango’s berth is no surprise to many for he was inspirational for the Uganda Cranes team leading them to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations with a game to spare. Uganda Cranes are still unbeaten with Onyango being the only goal keeper yet to concede a goal.

Onyango joined 10 other players namely the CAF footballer of the year 2018 Mohammed Salah, Aurier, Benatia, Bailly, Koulibaly, Keita, Partey, Mahad Mahrez, Aubameyang and Sadio Mane.

A huge FUFA delegation was present in Dakar as Onyango picked the award by himself. FUFA’s Moses Magogo a CAF Executive Committee Member attended the meeting earlier that confirmed Egypt as this year’s hosts for the AFCON tournament.

Uganda Cranes were earlier on nominated for the national team of the year award but instead it was Mauritania who claimed the honors.
