The Uganda Under 17 (U17) national football team alias The Cubs returned home on Monday evening to a heroic welcome after emerging champions of the CECAFA AFCON qualifiers held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
The team was received at the airport by various FUFA delegates who lauded it for earning its maiden qualification to the 2019 AFCON showpiece.
FUFA Vice Presidents Darius Mugoye and Hon. Nakiwala Florence Kiyingi, FUFA Executive Committee members Hamid Juma and Ronnie Kalema, Delegates, FUFA Deputy CEO Humphrey Mandu and other FUFA Staff received the team at the airport.
FUFA President Moses Magogo waited for the team at Jevine hotel in Rubaga where the boys were later treated to a special dinner.
The FUFA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Edgar Watson and other officials also joined in celebration.
Magogo lauded the team for putting up a resilient show in Tanzania and even tipped players for more glory in the continental showpiece if they are much focused.
‘’I thank you very much for making us proud in Tanzania because it is never an easy walk through the park. I have a word of caution towards these players. They need guidance. They are not yet finished products, they are just a potential. Qualifying for AFCON U-17 is ten times better than the AFCON senior team. I thank the Government of Uganda for the financial support in funding the Uganda Cranes. We are building a strong team,’’ Magogo noted at the event.
Head Coach Peter Onen thanked FUFA for its support towards the team as he observed that, “FUFA has always been there for us and we thank them for everything.’’
