Four Ugandan Under 23 (U23) female basketball players were on Monday flagged off for the inaugural FIBA 3x3 U23 World Cup in China, running from October 3-7, 2018.
Uganda's army of four players for the maiden 3x3 global showpiece comprises of; Jamila Nansikombi (JKL Dolphins), Ritah Imanishimwe( JKL Dolphins), Hope Agnes Akello (Ndejje) and Jane Asinde (Budo SS).
Uganda female U23 team managed to secure a spot in this competition after its top ranking in Africa. The men's team is not in this competition.
Uganda is seeded in Pool A alongside hosts China, Romania, Hungary and Germany.
Speaking at the flag off ceremony at Cooper Chimney Restaurant in Lugogo, team coach Hamza Nyambogo said,
''The players I picked are the most experienced in the game. They are very exposed to this stage of play and I hope they will be up for the challenge,'' Nyambogo noted.
The National Council of Sports Ag. General Secretary Patrick Ogwel warned the athletes not to be over taken with the joy of the new environment but rather focus on the game.
''Observe integrity and avoid urban excitement. I thank the team for this achievement because it is a sign of hard work,'' Ogwel noted.
Uganda is currently ranked Number 1 in Africa and 21 in the world while team captain and shooting guard Jamila Nansikombi is ranked the best player both in the country and on the continent.
