KAMPALA. The Uganda Junior Boxers alias Junior Bombers on Saturday evening landed on silverware gongs in Morocco at the 2018 Youth Men and Women Championships in Casablanca.
The Ugandan duo of Muhammad Bunya Mazida and Reagan Musoke are two heros that claimed the pair of medals out of the six of them that travelled.
However, the Ugandan contingent only comprised of male stars as the nation is currently falls short of young female Bombers with boxing champion, Patricia Apolot standing alone.
Musoke picked Silver in the flyweight (52kg) as Muhammad claimed Bronze in the Welterweight category (69kg) at the same continental do.
Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) President, Moses Muhangi who was also Uganda's Head of Delegation handed the medals to Uganda's successful stars.
''It is a big achievement for Uganda and it is a sign that Uganda's boxing is headed for greater heights. We now have to aim high and ensure that in the next major events we win gold. The boys have potential to do so and as UBF we shall help them,'' Muhangoi told the media after the games.
However, team captain, Collins Mutyaba was knocked out at the quarter-finals stage albeit putting up a spirited challenge.
Uganda's winning duo slimly misses out the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Argentina for it is only the successful finalists who qualify for the global event.
The gongs also come after Uganda's boxing prospect Juma Miiro claimed bronze in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
