Ugandan MPs in New York for High Level Political Forum

Ugandan delegation is in New York for High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that commenced on July 9, 2019.

The High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) is the United Nations hub for the global review of progress toward the implementation of the SDGs.

In the second and last week of the conference, the bureaus of different continents have been engaging with the different actors and ministers for continental key messages.

As a member of the bureau for Africa on SDGs, Ugandan delegation presented Africa position at the high level segment and has continued to engage to see to it that their issues on different SDGs are prioritized.

Ugandan delegation is headed by State minister for Environment Mary Gitutu while Ngora Woman MP Jacqueline Amongin is representing East Africa in the African Union. Other members present are; Ssembabule Woman MP Anifa Kawooya Soroti Municipality MP Herbert Ariko, , Mbarara Municipality MP Michael Tusiime, Pentagon Kamusiime (Butemba County), Paul Akamba (Busiki County), Sylvia Nayebale (Gomba district), Okot Ogong (Dokolo South) and others.

MPs Amongin and Kawooya are the fulcrum of Uganda’s representation at the Pan African Parliament and have ably articulated issues hampering political and economic progress in the African continent. The Pan-African Parliament is one of the organs of the African Union whose objectives are, to promote peace, security and stability in the region; facilitate cooperation and development in Africa; promote human rights and democracy and to encourage good governance, transparency and accountability in member states.

The meeting of the high-level political forum on sustainable development in 2019 convened under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council, started on 9 July, to 18 July 2019; including the three-day ministerial meeting of the forum from 16 July, to 18 July 2019.

Under the theme "Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality", the High-Level Political Forum reviewed set of goals including; Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all; Promoting sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth; Reducing inequality within and among countries; Taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts and others.
