The father to a six year old child recently tortured by the step mum has no case to answer since he had no hand in the act, the police have said.
Last Tuesday the police in Najjera, Kampala arrested 29 year old Peninnah Kukunda a resident of Buwate over alleged torture of the step son. The arrest followed a police tip off by the neighbours who became concerned following the continuous torture the woman reportedly subjected the six year old to.
Kukunda was subsequently produced to court, charged with aggravated torture and has since been remanded to Luzira Prison. Meanwhile as Kukunda faces wrath of the law, questions have been raised on the whereabouts of the victim’s father and why he did not report such gruesome treatment of the son to police. Some people have called on radio talk shows demanding that police arrest the man too as an accomplice in the case.
However Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango says the victim’s father was traced to Kiruhura district. He revealed however, that he cannot be arrested since he did not stay with the child. “The father was traced to Kiruhura, but he had no hand in the torture,” Onyango stated.
On calls that the man be charged with child neglect, Onyango cleared him of any wrong doing saying he had entrusted the child with the wife in Kampala and did not expect any mistreatment. “These guys stay in the village. They don’t come to Kampala always, they gave her the child hopping for the best but things turned out to be worse,” he told Kampala Post.
Photos of the victim released by police showed the young boy with multiple scars and injuries all over the body as a result of the continuous torture. According to police, efforts by the neighbours to rescue the victim fell on the suspect’s deaf ears. It’s alleged that one time she attacked one of the neighbours who tried to question her.
It was until last week that they were prompted to report the matter to Najjera police after the suspect locked herself inside the house as she tortured the child. “The neighbours got concerned and tried to approach her but she locked herself in the room,” the Police said shortly after arrest.
