Government Agencies Need Good Leadership for Project Optimisation, Says Museveni
President Yoweri Museveni has said the government has already put in place enough initiatives to create wealth and what's lacking is good leadership to realize the success of these projects.
The president cited the National Social Security Fund which "in 12 years... due to sustained economic growth and good management" has seen its assets grow 631% from just Shs2.1 trillion in 2010 to Shs15.6 trillion in 2021".
Member contributions have grown from just Shs388.1 billion to Shs 1.4 trillion, the president said.
Museveni says the success at NSSF needs to be replicated in all sectors.
"What has happened at NSSF can happen in other sectors... [government] has put in place and continues to invest in an enabling environment to support economic growth and the PDM to unlock the jobs in the agriculture sector and across the agriculture value chain," he said.
"What we now need is good leadership and patriotism in all sectors. If 1.5 million workers can save Shs1.4 trillion and earn an extra Shs1.7 trillion in investment income annually- imagine the impact that will be created when we fully unlock the Parish Development Model!"
The latest huge government project is the Parish Development Model (PDM) which is hoped to inclusively unlock the abundant untapped potential, especially amongst the 53% of Ugandan households who rely on subsistence agriculture for their livelihood and in turn unlock up to 50 million jobs in the medium to long term.
"I salute all Ugandan workers both alive and deceased on whose sweat, Uganda has grown from a small economy of just Shs14 trillion in 1986 to over Shs148 trillion today. I am happy with the decision to focus this year's theme on the transformative impact of the PDM," Museveni said.
