President Yoweri Museveni has said that the Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations and Commander Land Forces Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba is doing the right thing by making a contribution to Uganda through his work.

In an interview with BBC's Alan Kasujja, President Museveni said Gen Kainerugaba is one of the earliest Kadogos (child of the revolution) and that it is very good for Gen Kainerugaba to use his attributes to work for Uganda.

"Muhoozi was born in the struggle, he is one of the earliest Kadogos (young children of the revolution). He has those linkages and it's good for him to use them for the country -- for Uganda," President Museveni said.

He was born in Tanzania, lived in Kenya, trained in Egypt -- if the Egyptians say 'you come, you were one of our students here' and he goes and relates with them, it's very good, it's not a problem at all, Gen Museveni explained after being asked if Gen Kainerugaba is increasingly involved in the running of the State following his role in resolving the Uganda-Rwanda standoff among other diplomatic visits to President Uhuru Kenyatta and Egypt's Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

Asked if he is preparing Gen Kainerugaba to take over Uganda's leadership, President Museveni said he is preparing the NRM and the army. They know how to lead when time comes, Mr Museveni said.

Instead, the President said that Gen Muhoozi is doing his work at the right time, making a contribution to his country.

Gen Kainerugaba has been widely credited for resolving the standoff between Uganda and Rwanda after his self-initiated meetings with Rwanda's President Kagame resulted in the opening of the common border and free movement of passengers across the two sister countries.

Since then, President Kagame has visited Uganda while President Museveni has also visited Kigali in a show of warm diplomatic relations.

Meanwhile, Gen Kainerugaba has also visited South Africa where he met President Cyril Ramaphosa and most recently United Arab Emirates where he held meetings with counterterrorism experts and top government officials.
