Makerere University Unveils Shs1.6bn Data Management Facility
Makerere University has rolled out a Shs1.6 billion research private cloud computing facility. Found in the Directorate for ICT Support (DICTS) offices at the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT), the facility with constructed with support from the Government of Sweden through the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
The commission ceremony was presided over by the Acting Executive Director of Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) Eng. Irene Sewankambo, who appreciated the Swedish government for supporting ICT infrastructure development in the country.
Speaking at the function, the director of DICTS Samuel Mugabi hailed Sida for the continuous support it has rendered to the university, including the establishment of the optic fiber backbone network at different sections of the university and training DICTS staff.
“We are now moving into the Web 3.0 era where the state-of-the-art Research Private Cloud Computing facility will enable us to do high-performance computing, serve as a data repository for all 17 Mak-Sida projects and prepare Makerere University for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).”
The Director of the Directorate of Research and Graduate Training (DRGT) Prof. Buyinza Mukadasi thanked Sida for extending its support to research data management through the new facility.
“This is a one-of-a-kind facility to create access, storage, and security for our research data and I thank the Project PI Prof. Tonny Oyana for taking the initiative and showing us that it was possible to pull off this high-stake investment,” he said.
Sida’s cooperation with Makerere University goes back more than 20 years.
