A Kampala based hotel is on the spot after circulating a job advert seeking to recruit only white and Indian people to fill particular slots.

Located in Mutundwe, a Kampala suburb, Serene Suites & Hotel sponsored a job advert in the New Vision of Monday stating that white people and Indians were at an advantage to get top managerial jobs ahead of their black counterparts.

The advert that was published on Monday February 13 drew criticism among the members of the public on various social media platforms with some people calling for action against the hotel management for exhibiting discrimination based on race in their recruitment drive.

The advert had a list of slots including opportunities for waitresses and waiters, kitchen chefs, receptionists, pool attendants, housekeepers among others.

When it came to the slot of Hotel Manager and Restaurant Manager, the hotel indicated a preference for a white and an Indian person respectively.

Meanwhile, the Equal Opportunities Commission has now asked the hotel to explain the basis of the job advert in which they ring-fenced the top managerial jobs for particular people.

The Equal Opportunities Commission is mandated to eliminate discrimination and inequalities against any individual or group.

Through a statement signed by Mr Lawrence Mujuni, the secretary to the Equal Opportunities Commission, the Hotel has been ordered to halt the impending recruitment for the two slots in contention.

"You are hereby ordered to make a written explanation as to why your hotel seeks to recruit for the mentioned positions taking into account the prospective applicant's race and origin. The written explanation must reach the commission by close of business on Thursday, February 15, 2018," the letter reads.

The letter cites Article 21 of the Constitution of Uganda which prohibits discrimination based on race, colour or ethnic origin.

"Discrimination on these grounds is also prohibited in several provisions of the Equal Opportunities Commission Act of 2017. Section 6 of the Employment Act specifically prohibits discrimination in employment…the commission, therefore, found your advert discriminatory and an affront to the concept of equal opportunities," the letter reads further.
