Parliament: Romeo’s Restaurant and Bar Limited, the new service provider in the parliament canteen has been forced to cut down their food prices barely two months in the kitchen.
In January this year, court cleared Ntinda-based restaurant to provide services to Parliamentary staff and MPs after dislodging the incumbent- Hellenar’s Restaurant and Bar in an open evaluation bid last year. Hellenar petitioned Court protesting non-renewal of its contract and faulted the procurement procedures seeking fresh administrative reviews.
However, even before the new restaurant could fully settle down, they have already cut their food prices twice in less than two months in operation.
According to the Best Evaluated Bidder Notice issued last year, Romeo’s Restaurant and Bar emerged the best after offering lowest price of Shs11,500 for the MPs’ buffet menu, while Hellenar’s Restaurant and Bar offered Shs13,500.
The new service provider- Romeo’s restaurant has failed to sell their food at the initial evaluation price of Shs11,500 prompting them to cut their prices to Shs8000 for staff and Shs9500 for MPs which is served with a drink. A few weeks ago, the restaurant again revised their food prices and leveled it at Shs9500 for both staff and MPs.
Parliament staff who spoke to this reporter on condition of anonymity attributed the variance in prices to low turn up as the restaurant struggles to wow MPs and staff following complaints of ‘tasteless food.’
“The food is terrible I don’t like it,” one staff member said.
Another parliament staff gives a benefit of doubt saying their food could be tasteless because the new service provider has not yet settled down.
“I have eaten from there a couple of times. Their food is bland. Not as tasty as the previous service provider [Hellenars]. I don’t know whether they are just settling in but well I hope they improve,” the staff said.
Romeo’s Restaurant offers outside catering to several businesses such as Hardware World Uganda LTD, Wizarts Foundation Uganda LTD, Africa innovation Uganda LTD and Life Link Hospital.
