A senior Police Officer has died while on plane, Uganda Police Force Spokesperson Emilian Kayima has confirmed.
Commissioner of Police (CP) Wilfred Okello Makmot died while in transit from USA to Uganda. CP Makmot was attached to Ministry of Internal Affairs in the department of National Focal Point in Small Arms and Light Weapons.
In an interview, Police spokesperson Kayima confirmed the death saying, “This afternoon, we received information from the Ministry of Internal Affairs stating the bad news of the death of Commissioner of Police, Okello Wilfred Makmot. He died while on transit from New York USA to Uganda via Abudabi. Details surrounding our officer's death will be communicated in due course.”
Makmot’s death came to light after Internal Affairs ministry Permanent Secretary Aggrey Wunyi on July 11 wrote to Inspector General of Police (IGP) Martin Ochola Okoth informing him about the death of the senior officer.
“We have received communication from our ministry of foreign affairs originating from the Ugandan Embassy in Abu Dhabi that the above named officer (Makmot) died while in transit from the New York, USA to Uganda via Dubai,” the letter reads.
He adds, “We have requested to inform the relatives of the deceased and make arrangements for the body to be repatriated to Uganda. We look forward to further working together and assist the family at this trying moment.”
This is not the first time an officer has died on plane. In 2015, Gen Aronda Nyakarima, former Internal Affairs minister died while on plane while in transit from South Korea to Uganda. He is said to have died of cardiac arrest.
