Police in Kawempe are holding Allan Ggayi a suspected mobile money thug and recovered from him 160 stolen mobile phones.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango says Ggayi a resident of Kyanja Gayaza was arrested on Tuesday after he together with a colleague were intercepted in Bujjuko. According to Onyango, Ggayi together with Tonny Ssozi were intercepted by police after robbing residents in Kawempe. However, Ssozi escaped leaving his colleague in the hands of police.

The duo was driving in motor vehicle Reg.No.UBE641A which police have also impounded. “When the vehicle was searched we found over 160 mobile phones,” Onyango said. “They (suspects) were targeting mobile money agents pretending to be either withdrawing or depositing money and in that process they exchange their phones with the agent or steal the agent’s phone,” he added.

Following arrest, the police in Bujjuko transferred Ggayi to Kawempe Police station where he faces charges of robbery and theft. Onyango says the hunt for Ssozi is on. “We appeal to members of the public whose phones were stolen in this manner to report to Kawempe Police Station or to the police they reported cases,” Onyango said.
