Over four hundred million shillings was realized in cash and pledges during a fundraising drive towards the construction of a Golden Jubilee Complex at Immaculate Heart Girls’ School Nyakibale in Rukungiri District on Sunday.
The Golden Jubilee Complex which will comprise the school’s dining hall, main hall chapel, home management lab and classrooms plus study rooms is expected to cost about 11 billion shillings. During the fundraising, a portrait of President Yoweri Museveni, which was auctioned by the First lady and Minister of Education and Sports Mrs. Janet Museveni, collected one hundred million shillings. A heifer was bought at twenty million shillings for Mrs. Museveni and another was bought at 23.5 million shillings for Kabale Diocese’s Bishop Callistus Rubaramira. They both donated the cows to the School’s headmistress to enable the students benefit from the milk. Among other things auctioned was a portrait of Bishop Rubaramira, that of the first head teacher and a solar panel.
The old girls of Immaculate Heart Girls’ School Nyakibale, the business community from Rukungiri and the neighbouring districts, Members of Parliament and many individuals contributed highly to the cause with King Ceaser Mulenga donating the highest amount individually of 80.5 million shillings. Prior to the fundraising, a mass was celebrated led by Bishop Callistus Rubaramira where 86 students were confirmed.
Mrs. Museveni laid a foundation stone for the Golden Jubilee Complex and also unveiled the Golden Jubilee Logo to launch the Golden Jubilee functions for the school. The school that was opened in 1969 will be celebrating 50 years on March 3rd 2019. Addressing the people who attended the function, Mrs. Janet Museveni acknowledged the very good quality of Immaculate Heart Girls’ School Nyakibale and its students and congratulated the head teacher, staff, parents, community and Rukungiri District for the school.
“At the Ministry of Education we are striving for quality education in Uganda and we tell ourselves every day that we can no longer do business as usual. We keep on talking to ourselves that we must attempt to do what has never been done before so that we can see the fulfillment of our goal of bringing about quality education in Uganda which is an outcry in the country at this time,” she said.
She said the work going on at Immaculate Heart Girls’ School Nyakibale shows that there are some very good quality schools and all hope is not lost. “We need to give them all the support they need so that they can quicken their work and bring us to the fulfillment of our goal to ensure that quality of education we want to see across the country”.
She commended the school for producing morally upright students as exhibited by many of its old girls. She said all schools should strive to bring up morally upright students and women and men of integrity. “There is an outcry in the country for integrity which is a virtue that is missing in many people”, she added. She said the Ministry of Education is trying to restore all traditional schools and pledged to support the Golden Jubilee Complex.
Speaking about the current dry spell that has hit Rukungiri District, Mrs. Museveni challenged Christians to honour their obligation of tithing to the churches so that God blesses the work of their hands. In her remarks the Headmistress of Immaculate Heart Girls’ School Nyakibale Sr. Gladys Kachope justified the urgent need for the Golden Jubilee Complex saying the current facilities are too small for the expanding student enrollment. She thanked all those who have so far contributed and called for more support towards the construction of the Golden Jubilee Complex.
Both the headmistress and the Bishop of Kabale Diocese Cellistus Rubaramira paid tribute to Minister for Security Hon. Lt. General Henry Tumukunde for his special effort in mobilizing his colleagues and well-wishers for the cause The State Minister for Urban Planning Dr. Chris Baryomunsi and State Minister for East African Community Affairs Julius Wandera Maganda and many MPs were among the many people who attended the fundraising function.
