Elections of village youth committees were disrupted in over 50 villages in the districts of Kampala and Wakiso.
The Electoral Commission said that whereas the exercise was successful in other parts of the country, Wakiso and Kampala was majorly marred by riotous conduct by the voters, which prompted Police to disperse them.
Preliminary reports from Electoral Commission show that by the close of polling at 4:00pm, Monday, Kampala Capital City, had returned results for 928 Cells out of a total of 958 Cells.
“Preliminary reports indicate the elections were not concluded in 30 Cells due to riotous conduct by the voters.Other districts from across the country have reported peaceful electoral exercise, with isolated cases of violent conduct by candidates and their supporters, which attracted Police intervention,” the report says.
In Kazo, Kawempe Division, elections were halted after youth stormed the polling station, wanting to cast their vote even when their names were not on the voters register.
Wakiso District which has 533 villages had returns from 512 villages, with the exercise set to be repeated in at least 21 villages, where elections were called off due to chaotic behaviour. Districts such as Mityana successfully conducted elections in all the 612 villages.
EC PRO Paul Bukenya said that the villages that failed to conduct their elections will do so today (Tuesday) in accordance with the law.
