Gen Kainerugaba Hails Rotary for Practicing Military Principles
By Albert Tibweba
KAMPALA. The Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has hailed the similarities between rotary and the military, saying both institutions sacrifice to serve the least able in society.
This was during the installation of the 17th president of the Rotary Club of Bukoto that took place at Terranga Restaurant gardens in Bugolobi on Saturday evening.
Gen Kainerugaba said that he did not know much about the rotary movement until he was invited for the function by the incoming president Gloria Katuuku Kabundu who took over from Mr. Moses Kafeero.
“When I was invited by my sister Gloria, I made some research and discovered similarities with another institution that I know very well which is the military. I would like to thank you for the spirit of altruism and volunteerism because no one is forcing you to do what you are doing—you are doing it out of your own free will,” Gen Kainerugaba noted.
He added: “It is a good thing to sacrifice what you have to serve the least able, those that may not be as fortunate as you are.”
The newly installed president had earlier said the club would continue with the ongoing projects including the interventions in Mpigi and Kiruhuura districts, to which Gen Kainerugaba made a contribution of Shs10m towards the cause.
"I will give it to the new president and you will decide on what to use it for," he said.
The ICT minister, Frank Tumwebaze who was the guest of honor equally thanked the Rotarians for working to improve humanity.
Mr. Tumwebaze said that unlike religion where people work for the unknown – life after death, Rotarians work to improve the lives of those that are still alive, something he said is very important.
The Minister, however, urged the Rotarians to focus more on projects that support local populations instead of focusing on global causes that are far away from home and may therefore not impact our immediate population.
Former East African Legislative Assembly MP Mike Sebalu a member of the Bukoto club thanked the NRM government through the minister for creating an enabling environment for Rotarians and other institutions to implement their activities.
