Like they say in Holy Matrimony, “…till death do us part”, People of Usuk County, Katakwi District in Teso sub-region have asked President Yoweri Museveni to offer himself for the country's top office in the next presidential election.
Museveni has since Friday been camped in Teso as part of his countrywide activities on wealth creation. He climaxed his tour when he held a mammoth rally at Obulengorok, Okulonyo Sub County in Usuk on Saturday. Okulonyo Sub County, formerly under Ongongoja gave President Museveni the highest number of votes (80.5%) in the entire Teso sub-region during the 2016 elections.
During the rally, Faustine Arukori, LC1, Obulengorok took the microphone and showered Museveni with praises for fostering peace and stability. Okulonyo was a resettlement camp for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) during the Lord’s Resistance Movement (LRA) insurgency.
Arukori peaked his submission when he urged Museveni to remain in power for as long as he wants.
“We used to be in camps but now there is peace, we have gone back to our homes. We want you [Museveni] to die in power. We shall continue to vote for you until God takes you away from us,” Arukori said in a statement that handed him a standing ovation.
Katakwi LCV Walter Elakas was not any different. The district boss said that whereas some people have attempted to remove Museveni out of power, they have been failed because God still needs him [Museveni] in power. Elakas commended the NRM government under the stewardship of Museveni for water projects in Katakwi and urged that the government puts up more dams to cater the animals in the game and humans. He also lauded the government for sorting the long-standing Napak-Katakwi border conflict.
As a reward to Usuk people especially those from Okulonyo Sub County, Usuk County MP Peter Ogwang requested Museveni to hand over major roads to UNRA for construction. He also requested the President to construct more bridges especially the Milimil-Acowa bridge and Aketa-Amuria bridge. He also asked the President to put up a demonstration farm in the sub-county to steer youth into commercial farming.
“Mr. President, you have been setting up demonstration farms elsewhere, how about you set up a demonstration farm in this sub-county that gave you majority votes? I was also part of the team that took an assortment of motorcycles to leaders of Kasese, can the leaders here also benefit from such projects?” Ogwang said.
Ogwang also reminded Museveni about his earlier request to bail out Usuk SS, the only Catholic founded secondary school in the district to clear the over Shs100m loan that prompted Centenary Bank to impound the school bus.
Indeed, in his remarks, Museveni vowed to reward the people of Usuk accordingly as per the requests of their area MP. Museveni told UNRA officials who were present at the function to take over the major roads from the local government. He also promised to start a demonstration farm in Okulonyo Sub County.
“You voted the way you did because you appreciate what the NRM did for you. I call you good people who know how to see far. Give me land here for a demonstration farm and I will come and show you how commercial farming is done. I will use 4 acres to show you how to be rich. I also need 6acres to build a house,” Museveni said to the peoples’ excitement.
Museveni who was handed a traditional stool and spear as symbols of power by the elders gave Shs20m to the youth SACCO, another Shs10m NRM leaders SACCO and Shs 20m to the Bodaboda SACCO.
