Police in Kibaale district are holding a private school director and a head teacher for disobeying lawful order after they reopened a school which was recently closed over lack of basic education standards.
The suspects are identified as Byamukama Justus and Paul Kajwenge, the director and head teacher of Kisengwe Nursery and Primary school respectively, located in Bwamiramira sub-county, Kibaale district.
David Otabongo, Kibaale district police commander has confirmed the arrest saying the duo was arrested on Tuesday after they were found operating normally yet the school had been closed by the district education officials a week ago.
Last week, education officials from Kibaale district led by John Kyaboona, the district education officer closed over 10 private schools leaving over 1000 pupils stranded.
They were closed for failure to meet minimum education requirements.
Otabongo said they were forced to intervene after the district education officials asked them to reprimand schools administrators who had failed to adhere to the directives.
Last month, Government ordered for the immediate closure of all unlicensed schools in the country.
Ms Deborah Katuramu, Secretary in Office of President in a letter dated February 15 said that all schools should adhere to the existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) which should be fulfilled by the Management Teams of both Government Aided and Private Schools.
She subsequently directed all Resident District Commissioners (RDCs) to convene District Security meetings and come up with appropriate joint strategies to ensure that “no school is allowed to operate without meeting the minimum requirements stated in the Standard Operating Procedures.”
