Parliament to Hold Seminar to Prepare Outgoing MPs for 'Life after Parliament'
Parliament of Uganda is planning to hold a two day seminar on “life after parliament” for Members of the 10th Parliament who recently lost in the January general elections.
According to a communiqué from the Clerk to Parliament Jane Kibirige, Parliament through Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga Institute of Parliamentary Studies (RAKIPS) has organized the two day seminar for the outgoing MPs which is scheduled to take place from 29th- 30th April 2021.
The 10th Parliament is in its last hour of business and will wind up in May this year with the swearing in of the Members of the 11th Parliament most of whom are new MPs. Statistics show that over 75% of the Members of the 10th Parliament lost the elections and will soon return to face the ‘harsh’ societal realities.
“The aim of the seminar is to prepare Members for life after parliament,” Kibirige said in her letter.
Parliament is expected to spend millions of shillings to conduct this two day seminar for outgoing MPs. Apparently, over 10 key note speakers have been lined up with each of them being paid not less than Shs1.5million.
The Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga Institute of Parliamentary Studies (named after Speaker Rebecca Kadaga) first started in 2012 as a department in Parliament under the name, Institute of Parliamentary Studies.
In 2020, the Institute was renamed and established by an Act of Parliament as a semi-autonomous body with the objective of conducting courses for the exposition and enhancement of the knowledge, skills and experience of members and staff of the Parliamentary Commission and other legislatures, including local government councils.
