Speaker Anita Among has demanded a proper investigation into the cause of the fatal fire incident in a school in Mukono on Tuesday morning.

According to a police statement, a fire broke out at about 1 am at Salama School for the Blind in Luga Village, Ntanzi parish, Ntejeru Kisoga town council in Mukono district killing at least 11 children and six others in critical condition and admitted at Herona Hospital in Kisoga. Police say the cause of the fire is still unknown.

Speaker Among took to social media to condole with the families of the bereaved and called for speedy and comprehensive investigations into the cause of the fire.

“The news that 11 children have perished in a school fire at Salama school for the blind in Mukono is heartbreaking! Our sympathies go to the bereaved families and we wish the injured a quick recovery. @Parliament_Ug expects a proper investigation to get to the bottom of it,” Among tweeted.

Preliminary information shows that the fire is said to have started in a girls’ dormitory that houses primary one to three pupils. All 11 victims were burnt beyond recognition and will require DNA tests for identification while the survivors sustained severe burns.

The Salama School for the Blind was built in April 1999 by Mukono Local Government.
