Turkish Company to Construct Multipurpose Sports Complex in Lugogo
President Yoweri Museveni has endorsed a renowned Turkish construction company, SUMMA, to construct a state-of-the-art multipurpose indoor sports complex in Lugogo.
This was after meeting with SUMMA directors at State House, Nakasero on Tuesday. The meeting was among others attended by the Minister of Education and Sports, First Lady Janet Museveni and Sports Minister, Peter Ogwang who brought the company directors to the President.
The idea to partner with SUMMA to construct this facility was first born on 8th January 2023, when Minister Ogwang chaired an entry meeting that was attended by the President of SUMMA, Mr. Selim Bora, the technical team from the Ministry of Education and Sports, National Council of Sports and Makerere University at Protea Hotel, Entebbe.
This was followed by two other meetings with the representatives of SUMMA from their Rwanda regional office on 11th and 25th of January 2023 respectively.
"I welcome the proposal by Summa, a Turkish construction company, to construct a modern state-of-the-art multipurpose indoor sports complex at Lugogo in Kampala. The government will support them because we need it to continue developing sports in Uganda," Museveni tweeted after the meeting.
Inside the proposed sports complex
According to information obtained, the proposed modern state-of-the-art multi-sport and multi-use facility will be constructed at National Council of Sports premises at Lugogo, Kampala and will sit on approximately 12.6 acres.
The multi-sport complex will have key sports facilities that include; a multi-purpose indoor Sports Arena with sitting capacity of 15,000 persons, a small indoor sports arena with sitting capacity of 3000, 8 lane Swimming pool of 25m long, a multi- use Hockey standard pitch and athletes Hostel with capacity of 60 persons.
The complex will also have commercial facilities such as; hotel and accommodation facilities with 120 rooms, commercial space which includes shopping centres, showrooms, rental spaces and a state-of-the-art fitness Gym.
It will also contain other key facilities like; an administrative Block for National Council of Sports measuring approximately 5,000 square meters, parking space provision with capacity of 1,000 cars and a modern physiotherapy and wellness facility.
SUMMA has been internationally recognized for it's construction proficiency, having been at the helm of construction of many magnificent infrastructural project in the world, including the Kigali Arena, the Diori Hamani international airport in Niamey, Niger, Blaise Diagne international airport in Senegal, among others.
