HOIMA-Leaders in Bunyoro sub-region have backed President Yoweri Museveni’s sole candidature in the 2021 elections.
The resolution was reached at on Tuesday during a zonal leaders’ conference, also graced by the president at Kontiki Hotel in Hoima town. The meeting attracted leaders from eight districts that constitute Bunyoro Sub-region.
In the resolution presented by Kiryandongo district Chairman Charles Ntairehoki, the leaders backed the NRM Central Executive Committee resolution for the president to contest again and that of the NRM Caucus on Museveni’s sole candidature in the next election.
The about 1500 regional leaders who attended the conference pledged to mobilize and support Museveni to win the next election.
“We particularly and without hesitation endorse His Excellency Yoweri K Museveni as our sole candidate for election as the NRM National Chairman and NRM Presidential candidate in 2020/2021,” Ntairehoki said while presenting the resolution.
Last week Tooro leaders made the same resolution during Museveni’s tour of the region. Bunyoro and Tooro have always been an NRM and President Museveni’s stronghold, with majority of local leaders and Members of Parliament being NRM leaning. In the last elections, President Museveni garnered 70 percent votes in Bunyoro Sub-region.
According to some leaders and residents, NRM and President Museveni’s support could go higher in the next elections, given government’s delivery on key pledges, especially in infrastructure. Currently government is tarmacking the long demanded Kigumba-Kyenjojo road, which connects Bunyoro and Tooro.
Several other projects, say in the energy sector have been undertaken, with construction of Mini Hydro Power dams, which has stabilized power supply in the region.
The President who is in Bunyoro on his wealth creation and household poverty eradication regional tour, earlier commissioned 6 kilometers of tarmac roads upgraded under the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) project in Hoima Municipality.
