Police in Hoima district are holding a 22 year old man for allegedly conning his relatives Shs2million as ransom after faking his own kidnap.
Godfrey Katusabe, a resident of Mbogwe cell, Mparo division, Hoima Municipality is being held for allegedly faking his own kidnap and obtaining money from his relatives.
Allan Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson has confirmed the arrest saying Katusabe is being detained at Hoima police station as investigations continue.
Hakiza explains that police received a report over the weekend that Katusabe allegedly went missing last Tuesday and later on Wednesday called his brother claiming he was being held in captivity by unknown people who wanted the said amount in order to release him.
The relatives later mobilized the money and sent it to him and reported a kidnap case at Hoima police.
Hakiza said police started investigating by tracking the phone but discovered that the phone that received that money was Katusabe’s own and he was still using it.
Although Hakiza did not reveal details about where the suspect was arrested from, he said by the time of arrest, the said money was still on his mobile phone.
“This is a first incident of such a kind to be registered in the region but we are yet to discover the motive behind it,” Hakiza said.
